Come to the Forum on February 9 to learn about the Transition to the University Scholarship
Dreamers Scholarship Forum on February 9, 2020
Come to the Social Justice Forum on Sunday February 9 to learn about the needs of undocumented students at California State University Long Beach. There are many questions surrounding the status of DACA and how it will affect these students. We hope to have one of the campus attorneys, Sabrina Rivera as a guest speaker at the forum. Also hear about our year of transition for the Dreamers Scholarship Special Collection.
California State University Long Beach recently established a new scholarship to honor our own Norma Chinchilla for her steadfast contributions to immigrant rights. Our guest speaker Dr Kristine Zentgraf, chair of the Sociology Department at CSULB, is one of the founders of the new scholarship:
The Norma Stoltz Chinchilla Scholarship for Undocumented Students
The university scholarship needs to grow the endowment to provide funding for future scholarships. Supporting this scholarship provides financial aid to the same students that we have honored for the past 5 years. This year we are transitioning our Dreamers Scholarship Special Collection to support the university program.
We will have our own student awards for the Dreamers Scholarship one last time while also contributing to the new scholarship. We plan to award 2-3 scholarships directly to students and donate the rest of the funds to the university scholarship. The scholarships provided by the church to the students will be awarded during the Sunday service on April 19. Last year, we raised a record $8500. We hope the congregation will continue to be generous to this cause.
After 2020, the entire Dreamers Scholarship Special Collection donations will go directly to the university scholarship making it consistent with all our other Special Collections.
The special collection will be taken on the second Sunday of February, but you can support The Dreamer’s Scholarship by donating until the last Sunday of the month and either marking your check or your donation envelope with “special collection.”
