UUCLB August Special Collection — Urban Community Outreach

The recipient of the August Special Collection is the Temporary Shelter Fund of the Urban Community Outreach. The special collection is taken on the second Sunday of each month during the Worship Service.

The mission of Urban Community Outreach (UCO) is “to advance the interests and promote the welfare of the economically disenfranchised and homeless people in Long Beach by offering a welcoming environment to provide respite, nutrition, opportunity, and hope.” UCO does this in several ways.

On Sundays, Urban Community Outreach offers a community center for homeless people and the working poor in downtown Long Beach. There is a hot meal, a computer lab, a document-scanning station, medical care once a month, consultations with outreach workers, and many needed supplies are provided. These services have been unavailable due to Covid, but Sunday meals began again in August, and the drop-in center will reopen in September.

What UCO’s work looks like up-close: helping pay for rent and utilities (to help prevent homelessness), getting rooms for people through Project Roomkey, helping a man move into an SRO and then later a one-bedroom, and so much more, impacting so many.

In addition to this ongoing work, UCO runs the Temporary Shelter. L.A. County funds and operates a Winter Shelter from about December 1 to March 1. Rain and very cold nights often begin before the shelter opens. Even when the shelter is open, everyone must leave the premises by 7 a.m. no matter the weather conditions.

The Temporary Shelter is activated under harsh weather conditions, either providing a place to sleep or a daytime respite from the elements (as well as food). Families are provided motel vouchers during inclement weather. UCO also works closely with families to better their condition while waiting for permanent housing.

The special collection is taken on the second Sunday of each month, but you can support the Urban Community Outreach until the last Sunday of the month, by mail, text, or online.

If by mail, note “Special Collection” on your check, and send it to UUCLB, 5450 E. Atherton Street, Long Beach, CA 90808.

Using Text-to-Give, text the words “21 Special Collection” and the amount to 833-931-1845. To give $20, for example, text “21 Special Collection $20.” To cover any convenience fees for the church, you can add the word “cover” (so “21 Special Collection $20 cover”) or simply text “Cover fees on” to cover fees on all text gifts.
