The Special Collection during September (all collections from the September 3 service, and any others marked “Special Collection” during the month) will be directed to Christian Outreach in Action (COA). COA is a nondenominational, nonprofit organization that has been serving the Long Beach community for more than 35 years. COA provides a stable, daily environment for the homeless and poor, including women and children, by providing shelter, food, clothing, and spiritual support. COA also provides transitional housing and counseling that leads to the attainment of skills necessary to reach and sustain self-sufficiency through cooperative programs with teaching institutions and other agencies.
Meals are provided twice a day, every day, to anyone on their doorstep; groceries twice a week; clothing every day; diapers once a week; furniture when available; and bus tokens are distributed for transportation to job interviews, medical appointments, or appointments with agency workers.
COA has expanded thanks to volunteers and the generosity of supporters and partners. In addition to regular meal services and food banks, they have a pet food bank; a medical clinic provided in partnership with The Children’s Clinic; a bi-monthly Senior Day at The Little Brown Church, which includes lunch, entertainment, Bingo, and a food giveaway; and more.
COA also has a new shop that is just down the street from UUCLB: Clark & Atherton Mercentile, at 1772 Clark Ave. You can support COA by shopping there for or donating gently used and vintage clothing, household items, and small furnishings. The shop is staffed by volunteers, and donations that can’t be used in the shop get distributed weekly to homeless people, low-income families, and seniors.
