UUCLB February Special Collection: A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL)

A New Way of Life Reentry Project logo

This month our Special Collection and Social Justice Forum will be aligned. (Both will take place on February 14.) Our recipient will be A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL), and its founder, Susan Burton, will lead our Social Justice Forum at 11:30 after the service. She will address the need for systematic change in the criminal justice system; some of the changes proposed by the new DA George Gascón; and the injustice that channels people into the system to begin with.

A New Way of Life, it was established in 1998 as a safe house where formerly incarcerated women could find hope and stability after leaving prison. Susan Burton established ANWOL after serving six terms in prison.

From that one house in Watts, ANWOL has expanded to eight homes today. Its legal clinics provide pro bono services to people all over the county, sponsoring All of Us Or None. ANWOL also provides advocacy on behalf of formerly incarcerated people and leadership development for justice-involved women.

For more information on ANWOL and Ms. Burton, see anewwayoflife.org.
