Social Justice Stories of Hope – Guest At Your Table

NOW is the Time for Courageous Change.  Thank you for participating in our annual denomination wide Guest At Your Table program.  Guest At Your Table flyers and boxes are available after Service the first 2 Sundays in December.

This intergenerational program raised support for and awareness about key human rights issues, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). Participants receive information about four very special people working here or abroad to address injustice in its many forms. Then participants can gather around their kitchen or dining room table to discuss the efforts of each of the four guests. This provides Unitarian Universalists of all ages a chance to learn about what can be done to help others. A cardboard coin box is included for the middle of the table. This allows everyone to make a small contribution to the efforts of each “guest.” Since there are four highlighted “guests,” families have several opportunities to discuss and support each.

The four guests are:

  • Axel Fuentes, who is supporting the rights of migrant and refugee workers facing unjust working conditions in midwestern U.S. meat processing plants.
  • Myra Dahgaypaw, who is using her experience as a survivor of previous Burmese military junta violence to amplify the voices of Burmese ethnic minorities facing military brutality today.
  • Maina Talia, who is mobilizing along with the community of Kio Island in the Pacific to secure a resilient future in the face of climate change.
  • Cristian Guzman Merlo, who is helping revolutionize farming practices and gender justice in northern Nicaragua.

Since UUSC works in more than 20 countries, with over 50 grassroots partners, there are thousands of individuals that benefit from the work that our members make possible. Guest At Your Table flyers and boxes are available after Service the first 2 Sundays in December. Boxes were collected on December 12, and the amazing Stories of Hope from these four guests were shared with friends and family visiting over the holidays.
