Racial Justice Work – It Starts With Our Hearts and Minds

We have some exciting and transformative work to do together this year. We can all participate, no matter how busy we are. Every small step brings us closer to Beloved Community.

First, the 8th Principle Task Force is reaching out to members and friends for conversations in small groups and one-on-one. We’ll be talking about the importance of adopting the 8th Principle as part of our congregational commitment. Here’s the text:

“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

What can we do: when you get a call or the conversation comes up in coffee hour, please listen. Or visit this website to learn more: https://www.8thprincipleuu.org/background

We think it’s important to adopt the 8th Principle because it’s a commitment to the work of creating an anti-racist congregation and society. It’s a recognition that this is spiritual work.

So how do we do this work? We have a guidebook in the UUA’s Widening the Circle of Concern report. It tells us why we lose people who could flourish in our congregations. More importantly, we now have a guide for transforming our behaviors, structures, and perspectives. The Widening report is drawn from talking to UUs of color, who speak honestly of their experiences in majority-white congregations.

They name the micro-aggressions, the unconscious biases, and unwelcoming policies and behaviors they have encountered in UU congregations. It will be hard and painful work to recognize and change these attitudes and behaviors. It’s worth it because we will be a more open-hearted and joyful community as we work together.

We will start by studying the Widening the Circle of Concern report together, and taking the recommendations to heart. The Racial Justice team is organizing study groups. We hope to have a number of them at various times, starting in February.
