A number of us met a few weeks ago to talk about what we can do to support our immigrant neighbors. Come to a Social Justice forum on the topic of Immigrant Justice on Sunday, September 15th.
What can we do as a congregation? Here are some possibilities:
Support Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition. We hope to sponsor a UUCLB table at the October 12th annual fundraising dinner.
We can plan a one-day border trip. The impact of seeing the ugly gash of the border wall is powerful.
The Long Beach Sanctuary Coalition has been organizing for two years. Right now the most desperate and relentless need is access to bail funds for detainees. We are working to create a Long Beach bail fund. There are other things we can do: join the ICE raid response network, help raise money for a caseworker and legal services, and organizing support teams to assist families in the aftermath of detentions.
We will offer workshops and forums to educate ourselves on the topic. There’s a lot of emotionalism and misinformation out there—let’s teach ourselves to counteract it with information and compassion.
We will keep you all informed of ways you can support our immigrant neighbors in Long Beach. We welcome your energy and your ideas. Start by joining on September 15, and in the meantime, come and talk to us at the Social Justice table.
