Date(s) - Thursday, August 22, 2019
12:00 am - 9:00 pm
Starting August 22nd and running through September, Rev. Rick will teach a class on lay preaching. You’ve enjoyed hearing some of the graduates of last year’s preaching class in the last several months: Joanna Kimmit, Lee Salazar, Phibun Ny, Michael Kimmit. (Roy Lansdown shared his sermon in June).
If you feel you have a sermon in you, Rev. Rick would love to help you bring it out. Lay preaching is an excellent way to build community by sharing our deep selves. And lay preaching models many of the unique features of our Unitarian Universalist faith: our embrace of diverse beliefs, and our doctrine that each person is capable of experiencing the transcendent directly, for themselves.
The course consists of five weekly sessions. We will cover topics such as worship theory and the role of the sermon, how a sermon differs from a lecture, writing tips for a manuscript intended to be read aloud, use of the voice, and integrating hymns and readings. Participants will write a sermon during the course and practice preaching at least a portion of it during the final class. Classes will be Thursday evenings, August 22 through September 19. Contact Rev. Rick know if you would like to participate via email contact below or by talking with him.
