Social Action

This is a broad title that comprises a number of groups within our church that try to make a difference in our community and our world.

All who are interested in peace and justice issues are encouraged to come to the meetings and bring ideas, information, feedback, and energy. If you are interested and unable to attend, call or email us .

Assist the Homeless

Volunteer at the Homeless Drop-in Center

Volunteers are urgently needed at the Homeless Drop-in Center every Sunday, noon-4 p.m. at First Congregational Church, in downtown Long Beach. The Drop-in Center provides a place for homeless people that is friendly and safe. Here, homeless people are treated with respect and for a few hours a week they can reclaim a bit of their dignity.
The Center shows movies, provides books and current newspapers as well as a sixteen work station computer lab and snacks. The greatest number of people using the center are working, homeless people. Families in need and students are also among those who come. You are invited to drop in and help out. The church is located at 3rd and Cedar. Or you may contact Janet Sue Rhodes, coordinator, at janetsue_rhodes@yahoo.com, 562-590-9520.

Support the Rainy Day Shelter

Operated by the Long Beach Mission, under the direction of Rev. Jim Lewis, the shelter will be in a separate location (yet to be determined) to provide shelter for homeless individuals in the event of 40% or greater change of rain or a temperature of 40 degrees or less. Funds are needed to launch and support this effort.

Donations should be sent to Food Finders, a 501c3 non-profit operation for over 13 years. Checks should be made out to Food Finders/Rainy Day Shelter and sent to Food Finders, 3434 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90807, attn: Arlene Mercer, Treasurer. Or checks can be made out to UUCLB with "Rainy Day Shelter" on the memo line.

Recent news from ICO:

 Action Taken to Curb Pollution

A major concern for families in Long Beach is the high levels of asthma and respiratory problems among students, school staff and residents. It appears to be connected to the extremely high levels of particulate matter in West Long Beach. A year ago, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) Board allocated $1.4 million for air filters and emergency notificaiton equipment for schools in the West Long Beach area. This was a result of an ICO campaign to reduce the impact of air pollution on Long Beach.

At a community meeting with the AQMD ICO received commitments to test air filters, increase monitoring, and work with the community to improve notification systems. Three schools, Hudson, Del Amo, and Dominguez, will test air filters in classrooms and fence-line monitoring equipment.

The AQMD Board allocated funds for these purposes from 1173 penalties on oil refineries for excess emissions and the settlement of a lawsuit against British Petroleum for illegal emissions into our communities and falsifying records.
