The Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach

Activities for the Whole Family

There are many activities within the church, but some are especially designed for young and old alike. We have highlighted some special annual events.

Contemporary Folk Music

This ongoing program meets 1st Friday of the month in The Lounge from 7pm - 9pm (Potluck at 6 pm for those interested) Welcome to all those who enjoys singing and playing folk music together (and their families - even young ones.)

The contemporary folk group shall learn acoustic "coffeehouse" style music from one another. Each week a person will teach a song to the group. The group will primarily focus on music from the 1980's, 1990's and 2000's. The goal of the group is to learn to play music well enough to perform at a Sunday service once or twice a year.

Music and Movement

Music and Movement is an ongoing educational music experience program for children ages four to nine. There are separate classes for each age group.

It is a multidisciplinary program that combines elements of Orff-Schulwerk and Kodaly methods with traditional philosophies of music education. It combines singing, playing, listening, moving and creating to encourage musical, social, emotional and physical development.

There is a fee associated with this program, and scholarships are available to UUCLB members.

Martin Luther King Parade

This annual parade is a celebration of the great work and change Martin Luther King Jr. brought to our nation. Join our church at the parade and festivities afterwards, as we honor Dr. King in this community-based celebration. In previous years our UU congregation has marched in the LB Martin Luther King parade. The parade organizers are asking churches to participate as spectators, not marchers.
The parade begins at 10:30 am at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street, and will culminate in a multicultural celebration at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Avenue. The celebration will include music and dance performances; food and vending booths; and various games and activities for the community.

Show your support for the community by attending the parade and the festivities afterward at King Park!

Secret Pals

Sponsored by the Religious Education Committee, this event spans 4 weeks where young and old exchange letters and small gifts, without knowing their pals name. This event ties our youngsters with teenagers and people young-at-heart. A wonderful picnic ends the month of "secrecy" as pals share their lunch and all their fun under the structure.

Event Date: The deadline for turning in registration forms is this
Sunday, January 14th. Pick up forms at the Religious Education Table this Sunday.

All Church Seder

You, your family and friends are invited to join our Annual Seder. We use our own Unitarian Universalist Haggadah and celebrate this special holiday as a "family." During our delicious Seder dinner, Unitarian Universalists young and old and their guests perform Passover readings to honor the oppressed Jews of Moses time. As the dinner progresses, we also celebrate the ultimate freeing of Jewish slaves. The Haggadah (reading) has been updated to reflect the concerns of our times.

The passover dinner includes a tradition of fun and high spirits. The young and young-at-heart enjoy the hunting game for the afakomen (half of a hidden motzah) and the music and spontaneous circle dancing often cap off the evenings festivities.

Event date:  Saturday, April 7,  2007—5:30  p.m. in Wylder  Hall
Mayday

This event, celebrating the beginning of spring, is an annual "party" at our church held during church service. Face-painting, maypole dancing, flower crowns and plenty of games make this day a joyous celebration for all involved.

Event: May 5, 2007, Place: Church grounds

Holiday Party

On this special Sunday afternoon, we gather to make crafts, eat great food and sing. We celebrate the many traditions from which we come and learn more about traditions new to each of us: Chanukah, Winter Solstice, Christmas and Kwanzaa.

Event Date: December 2007
